Residence permits for citizens of other countries - first apply for relevant visa in your home country

If you wish to visit Nuremberg as a tourist or business traveler, you need a tourist or business visa. This is valid for maximum 90 days and must be obtained in your home country by applying to the German Embassy or a German consulate. You usually receive this visa within a few days. This visa also allows you to conduct business in Nuremberg for your company in your home country (e.g. installation and commissioning of machinery, conducting negotiations, concluding contracts, assembling or manning exhibition stands). These activities require no work permit or residence permit.

However, if you wish to complete a period of training in a company, accept employment in a company or become self-employed in Nuremberg, you need a visa that already includes an appropriate residence permit.

To obtain this you must apply to the German Embassy or a German consulate in your home country. This authority will then ask the Nuremberg Aliens Department if you will receive a work permit for the intended employment. You will only receive the appropriate visa if a work permit will be issued. Please note that this check can take several weeks to complete. A simplified visa procedure is available as part of the Green Card scheme for IT specialists.

You need a residence permit, which is granted in the form of a limited residence permit (Aufenthaltserlaubnis - leads to a permanent residence permit) or a residence permit (Aufenthaltsbewilligung) for trainees or students.

The decision on the residence permit is made by the following authority in Nuremberg:

Residents Registration Office Nuremberg, Aliens Department
Hirschelgasse 32 (or entrance via Äußere Laufer Gasse 25)
90403 Nürnberg
Telephone: (09 11) 231 - 85 54 or 84 73 (coordinating office for business and universities)
Fax: (09 11) 231 - 32 83
E-mail: ep@stadt.nuernberg.de
Internet: www.einwohneramt.nuernberg.de

You need the following documents:

  • Employee: Certificate of employment showing the type and duration of the employment contract (specimen form obtainable from the Web site of the Residents Registration Office (Einwohneramt): http://www.einwohneramt.nuernberg.de/allgemein/antraege.html
The Residents Registration Office checks with the Employment Office if a work permit will be granted. Your employer will then attend to your work permit.
  • Students: Admission to course of study and certificate of maintenance

Only under certain conditions is it possible to obtain a visa with residence permit that also allows you to work or become self-employed in Nuremberg:

  • You will only receive a work permit as an employee if you exercise a profession that is required in Nuremberg, e.g. scientist, engineer, IT specialist, international exchange specialist.
  • If you wish to become self-employed in Nuremberg, you will only receive a residence permit if an overriding business interest or a special regional need exists, the activity can be expected to have positive impacts on the economy and the financial requirements for implementation are secured by proprietary capital or a promised loan.
